COP opens a new Floating Wind Competence Centre in Scotland

Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) is proud to announce that it has opened an office in Edinburgh, Scotland which will act as the company’s global floating offshore wind competence centre. 

Speaking at the Scottish Renewables and RenewableUK Floating Offshore Wind UK Conference on 08 October 2020, Richard Copeland, Technical Development Director based in the new Edinburgh office added “With Scotland’s strong oil & gas and marine heritage, history of innovation and leading status and potential in floating offshore wind, Edinburgh is the ideal place for COP to launch the growth of our floating wind ambitions.”

The first new employees in the office have already started with recruitment ongoing.

COP is actively developing offshore wind power projects in Scottish waters and look forward to working with government, local suppliers and communities to continue Scotland’s renewable energy success story.

At COP, we are continuously focused to attract diverse talent – therefore we are especially proud to welcome Jens Bonefeld into the team. Jens was part of the world’s first commercial offshore wind farm, Horns Rev 1 – hence a ‘grand old man’ within the offshore industry. 

So why did Jens decide to join COP? Read his story below:

“In a broader perspective the planning and execution process for ‘real stuff’ has always fascinated me. It led me to choose a Master in civil engineering and work with soil, steel and concrete for bridges and power stations. A R&D program was my first step into wind power and as the idea in Denmark about combining shallow water with the ability to produce wind turbines matured I was so lucky to be part of a governmental study with the aim to introduce offshore wind in Denmark back in 1997.

As a result of that work, I ended up heading the EPC team on the world’s first large scale offshore wind park – Horns Rev I, DK. The next almost twenty years, similar roles followed for projects in UK, Germany, Taiwan and US.

As COP now is about to go full steam on a project in Korea, I was offered the opportunity to get onboard as EPC director which tempted me both because of the role itself and because of the opportunity to be based in Korea.

COP is a small organization which strives to keep the way of working simple.  I find this ambition very positive. There is a lot of experience in COP combined with young talents. The fact that we are working with green energy adds to the atmosphere of dedication to the tasks. 

My planned retirement ended up being a bit postponed, but I enjoy being part of a team and wanted to be part of this growing business rather than following it from the sideline.

I hope to be able to establish a good cooperation between the JV partners in the projects despite of different starting points from a technical and cultural point of view – so we can deliver a solid project.”

At COP, we are so fortunate that many bright students want to work for us part-time during their study. Meet four of our students whom we have succeeded to hire into full time roles after finalizing their Master degrees.

Rebecca Marshall, Consenting Analyst with a Msc in Climate Change, explains how she likes to work for COP “because we collaborate on projects in interdisciplinary teams. I find the work rewarding because we are supporting the transition to renewable energy which is important for addressing climate change. My work at COP as a student gave me a good insight into the offshore wind industry.”

Ludovic Blunat, who recently started as BI Analyst, states: “For the past year, I had the unique opportunity to gain knowledge and experience at COP in addition to my master studies at DTU. I am excited about keeping on supporting COP’s commitment to a green energy transition and I am really looking forward to contributing to this goal.”

Mads Mohr Madsen, who will start as a Procurement Analyst in September, explains: “Starting at COP I was thrilled about the agile and ambitious atmosphere. My greatest motivations for starting full time a COP is to continue working in this environment and learning even more from some of the very best people in the industry. In the student team there is a great team spirit, everyone is expected to deliver high quality results and in return have the chance to learn from highly skilled and inspiring people.”

Finally, Lena Biester who will start in October as Senior Finance Analyst, appreciates our fast-growing environment. “When I started at COP 2 years ago, I was the 22^nd employee of the company. Since then I’ve had the pleasure to witness an immense growth to the more than 100 employees we are today. Working together with the smartest people of the industry in an innovative and agile environment has not only taught me a lot but has also been incredibly fun!”

On June 5^th 2015 Henrik Scheinemann and Lars Thaaning Pedersen founded Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP).
